The Perur Aadheenam has the legacy of being part of the Kailaya Meikandar Guru Parambarai with a rich history of more than 500 years. The Shanthalingar Peruman Thiru Kovil in Perur is the place where Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvathi manifested as "Ammai & Appar" on the Nandi and blessed Shanthalinga Adigalar. The Aadheenam was started by the great guru & saint, Shanthalinga Adigalar, in the early 17th century as a source for learning Tamil and Saivism from renowned gurus. St. Ramaswamy Adigalar transformed the Aadheenam into educational institutions in the early 1900 to provide today’s quality education along Tamil Saivite teachings to help people lead a peaceful life.

A Brief History of Perur Mutt

Saivism is one of the major traditions within Hinduism that reveres Lord Shiva as the supreme being. The tradition’s roots are ancient and is traceable in the Vedic literature of second millennium BCE. Saivism theology ranges from Shiva being the creator, preserver, and destroyer to being the Atman (self, soul) within oneself and every living being. The followers of Saivism are caller "Saivites".
